There's More to Reading Than Sounding Out Words

What Literacy Means to Me

Literacy is often defined as the ability to read and write, but literacy involves so much more. Literacy is also the ability to communicate and interact with the world around you in a meaningful way.

  1. Some children can read (decode) just fine, but do not understand what they are reading.
  2. Some children understand high level stories when they listen to them, but cannot understand those stories when they read them.
  3. Some children read and understand, but work so hard at it and read so slowly that is not enjoyable.
  4. Some children read fluently, but when they try to put their thoughts on paper they are disorganized.
  5. Some children cannot put their thoughts on paper because they cannot spell the words they want to use.

NONE of these children are fully literate.

When we talk about children needing reading intervention we immediately assume that the child is not able to decode (or sound out words), but often that is not the case. Literacy includes all of these areas. Any one or more of these area could potentially be a weakness for a child or adult and may need specific focus for instruction.

  • print awareness
  • phonological awareness
  • phonics/decoding
  • fluency
  • vocabulary
  • spelling
  • comprehension
  • writing

If you, or your child, is struggling in any of these areas of literacy, we are here to help! Contact us today for information.
